i hate wisconsin

Dear Wisconsin,

Why do you suck so bad? I know I said, "Who cares?" about the election, but the truth is, I care.

I don't want to discriminate against those who live a different lifestyle than I do. I don't want to punish them because they don't fit within the "norm." I don't believe that gay marriage/unions are detrimental to the state of marriage in the US. I think that homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals. Even though I don't practice religion, and I'm not sure if there is a God, I'd like to think that he/she wouldn't have made people the way they are if he/she didn't want them to be happy. Like my mom said, God hasn't talked to me about this, so I don't know what he/she thinks. So until I find out, I'm going to treat everyone equally. Why couldn't everyone else feel the same?

Why did my wonderfully liberal state all of sudden turn hopelessly conservative? Why are we on par with Texas, with the banning of civil unions and adding the death penalty? I feel so silly now that I have seen the process of "democracy" in action. I went out, I took time to sit in line and cast my ballot. But still I was overruled, and I feel that Wisconsin will be the one to pay the most. Do you think that changing the Constitution will make all the gay people go away? Because you just signed yourself up for years of protests and appeals.

I know some people are happy about the results, and I feel sad for them, because they are so narrow minded and stuck in their ways. I've heard a lot of adults, like my parents and my professors, talk about how they've messed things up for my generation. But I get the feeling that my generation isn't doing too hot either. We're wrecking the environment, wasting resources, killing innocent people, and basically making Earth a dump. I feel like I'm in a small minority of the 18-24 range who gives a shit about our world. Most of my peers are happy to just go on buying Louis Vitton purses and Prada sunglasses, and not caring about the world around them.

I want this to be a better place. I want to be able to express my opinion and let everyone else express theirs, whether or not I agree with it. I want Washington and the government to play fair, and to stop hurting the majority to benefit the minority. I want everyone to stop calling names. I want my kids to accept everyone for who they are, and I want all the kids they talk to to do the same. I want my kids to have senses of humor. I want the WORLD to have a sense of humor. That's the best way we can deal with the problems we face. I want everyone to realize that if they just do a little bit, change one light bulb, start printing on both sides of the paper, start recycling their plastic bottles, that we can save millions of trees and other materials by reusing what we already have.

I'm sorry Wisconsin, that now instead of being an ideal place to live, you've become an oppressive state that doesn't really tolerate anything. I used to be proud of saying I was from Wisconsin, but now I hang my head in shame. I just hope that we haven't irrevocably changed, and that someday we can look at you with pride, instead of embarrasment.

Hopelessly Jaded,

Cate
